Shipping containers are sold under industry-standard condition grades. Each grade tells you the structural integrity, age, cosmetic appearance, and intended use of the unit. Understanding these grades helps you match the right container to your project — and budget.
This page explains every condition tier we sell at United States Container Express, so you can buy with full confidence.
The Four Standard Container Conditions
1. New / One-Trip Containers
A One-Trip container is a near-new unit manufactured overseas and used for a single voyage to the United States before being sold. These are the highest-grade containers available outside the factory.
Typical characteristics:
- Age: less than 12 months
- Paint: factory-fresh, choice of color in many cases
- Doors: smooth operation, factory-sealed gaskets
- Floor: original 28mm marine plywood, no contamination
- Cosmetic: minimal scratches, dings, or surface rust
Best for: Long-term storage, retail conversions, modifications, office builds, residential placement where appearance matters.
2. Cargo-Worthy (CW) Containers
A Cargo-Worthy container has been inspected and certified as structurally sound for international ocean shipping. It carries a valid CSC (Container Safety Convention) plate and meets ISO standards.
Typical characteristics:
- Age: typically 8–15 years
- Paint: original or recoated, surface wear is normal
- Doors: fully functional with intact gaskets
- Floor: structurally sound, may show wear
- Cosmetic: visible dings, surface rust, prior carrier markings
Best for: Buyers who need a certified, road-worthy, ocean-ready container at a mid-tier price point.
3. Wind & Water Tight (WWT) Containers
A Wind & Water Tight container is guaranteed to keep contents dry and free from wind intrusion. It is not certified for international ocean shipping, but is fully suitable for on-ground storage and most domestic uses.
Typical characteristics:
- Age: typically 10–20 years
- Paint: weathered, surface oxidation expected
- Doors: functional, gaskets seal
- Floor: structurally sound, cosmetic wear normal
- Cosmetic: dents, dings, patched repairs, visible rust spots
Best for: On-site job storage, equipment lockup, farm and ranch use, secondary storage where appearance is not critical.
4. As-Is Containers
An As-Is container is sold without any condition warranty. It may have leaks, holes, floor damage, door issues, or significant rust. These are typically the lowest-priced units we offer.
Typical characteristics:
- Age: variable, often 15+ years
- Paint: heavily weathered
- Doors: may require repair
- Floor: may be damaged or missing sections
- Cosmetic: significant rust, dents, or structural concerns possible
Best for: DIY repair projects, scrap, artistic modifications, salvage builds, or buyers planning a full refurbishment.
